Happy 76th Birthday to Lamont Dozier, the musical genius behind Holland-Dozier-Holland, one of the greatest songwriting teams in pop music history. These guys wrote 15 Billboard #1 hits – only six other songwriters have ever written more – and a whopping 35 Top Ten hits, the vast majority of them between the years 1963 and 1967. Who knows how great Motown artists might not have been without the great songwriting and production arrangements these guys gave them? Dozier broke the rules with his wildly inventive chord changes and section transitions, and together with his partners greatly influenced the songwriting of British Invasion bands and other Rock pioneers. Also, his reliance on the transcendent bass playing of the magnificent James Jamerson, clearly evident on this track, taught many Rockers how great bass playing can carry a song.
