Song of the Day: Harry Nilsson – “Coconut”

Today marks the birthday of the late great Harry Nilsson, who passed away of heart failure in 1994. Nilsson, who would have been 76 this year, wrote this song about a girl with a stomach illness who is given a concoction to fix her ills by a doctor. Per Songfacts, the roots of this song came when Nilsson wrote the word “coconut” on a matchbook while on a Hawaiian vacation. Nilsson found the matchbook some time later while driving and wrote the song in his car. All the different voices on the song come from Nilsson, who was encouraged to do so by his producer after originally intending to sing the song in a regular voice.
