Song Of The Day: Ray Charles – “Eleanor Rigby” (1968)

Ray Charles passed away on this day in 2004 at age 73, but it’s never a bad day to listen to or to remember the musical genius of this man. Ray Charles surely influenced and inspired the first generation of Rockers more than any other vocalist ever did. Shouting, shrieking, wailing, hollering – every Rock vocalist who ever let ‘er rip owes a debt to Brother Ray. He taught the whole Western world what soulful singing was all about. Although he wrote many of his early hits, he decided in the early 60s to concentrate on interpreting the work of others, and he could completely transform a song in the process. Consider this fantastic Beatles cover, who would have guessed that “Eleanor Rigby” had so much soul in it?
