Song Of The Day: Deep Purple – “Help” (1968)

Deep Purple founder and keyboardist Jon Lord was born on this day in 1941. Lord, who passed away in 2012, led the charge for what many consider to be the prototype for the heavy metal genre. While other keyboardists of the late-60s rushed to adopt the Moog synthesizer, Lord made modifications to the old-fashioned Hammond B-3 organ, making it sound grittier and grungier than anyone has before or since. His wild and powerful keyboard solos were the defining aspect of Deep Purple’s sound, and you could pretty much pick any of their tracks to find one. But since everybody’s talking Beatles these days, you’ve got to hear this amazing Beatles cover if you haven’t already.
