Song Of The Day: Billy Preston – “Outa-Space” (1972)

On this day in 2006 the world lost Billy Preston to kidney disease and respiratory failure at age 59. Preston is surely one of the greatest sidemen in Rock history, being the only outside artist not just to record with but also to share billing with the almighty Beatles. The single “Get Back” was officially credited to “The Beatles with Billy Preston”. As if that wasn’t enough, Preston would go on to be the Rolling Stones primary keyboardist between the years 1973 and 1977. You can’t reach any higher as a Rock sideman than working with both the Beatles and the Stones. He worked with other name artists and also had a successful solo career in the early Seventies, scoring two Billboard #1 hits and two others in the top 5, including this funky instrumental jamma, which is graced by George Harrison’s sweet guitar licks.
