Song of the Day: The National – “Squalor Victoria” (2007)

The National aren’t your typical rock band. They’re a band with a versatile catalog that features high-intensity rockers, and then they turn on a dime with a sullen, baritone-focused ballad. If you’re looking for a more rock-focused album, The National’s Alligator is where you want to start- a true grower in every sense of the word. But, I present this song of the day because this album, The National’s Boxer, turned 10 years old in May.

Boxer is a very elegant rock album. It took to indie rock with a beauty, darkness and class that only The National can bring. You’ll remember that they just announced their new album, Sleep Well Beast, this month. With the current track “The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness” it seems they aim to add a hint of prog to their twisted beauty. Like a fine wine, The National’s music gets better with age.
