Great New Track: Matthew Sweet – “Trick”

Matthew Sweet has a great ear for Rock. He is an excellent guitarist and vocalist, but he also has an uncanny knack for finding great sounds, whether it’s the sweet tones of his guitars, the perfect balance of his lead and backing vocals, or simply his exquisite Rock arrangements in general. I suppose this speaks to his talents as both a producer and a performer, and explains why he is so good at making cover tunes. So maybe songwriting isn’t his long suit, but he really found some magic with his 1991 album Girlfriend, which I think was easily one of the best albums of the Nineties.

Sweet is releasing a new album next month titled Tomorrow Forever, and I am really enjoying the first single “Trick”. The album was funded entirely by a Kickstarter campaign back in 2014, so it’s both an album and a lesson in democracy. On it Sweet deals with the death of his mother as well as his move from Hollywood back to his native Omaha. Lots of great musicians pitched in too, including Rod Argent of the Zombies and Gary Louris from the Jayhawks.

“Trick” is vintage Matthew Sweet, you can listen to it here. Those guitar sounds, the great vocals, they are so distinctive. And in this case, it’s a really well-written song, with some great chord changes, a nice lyric and a great hooky chorus. Nothing groundbreaking here, just a solid pro delivering the goods. Looking forward to hearing the rest of it when it drops June 16.
