Song of the Day: Fiona Apple – “Criminal”

Spin Magazine recently posted a list of their top 79 alternative songs of 1997, and after skipping right to the No. 1 spot expecting to find “Paranoid Android,” I found this song in the top spot instead. I like the choice. The song’s an absolute sizzler; I like so much of what Fiona Apple has done, but nothing as much as this one. When paired with the sleazy, saucy video, there’s no question this song cast a lasting impression in 1997. Some of the songs “Criminal” beat out on Spin’s list included “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, “Karma Police” by Radiohead, “Song 2” by Blur, and “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. As for “Paranoid Android,” surprisingly enough it’s nowhere to be found.

  1. My main complaint with the video for this song is the same one I had when I was 12. She keeps taking off clothes but never actually appears naked.
