Song Of The Day: Bob Dylan – “Subterranean Homesick Blues” (1965)

On this day in 1965 Bob Dylan recorded this promotional film which is regarded as one of the first and still one of the best Rock videos ever made. It was filmed in an alleyway at the side of the Savoy Hotel in London where Dylan was staying. Everyone involved must have recognized that they’d made something pretty great, because the footage was used as the opening segment of D.A. Pennebaker’s crazy Dylan documentary Don’t Look Back. Looking back on it now, it still holds up as a great concept for a music video, which I think speaks to Dylan’s astonishing creativity. It is a statement about the disposability of modern communication that still resonates, although today some might regard it as the first manual keyword search.
