Song Of The Day: Blues Traveler – “Run-Around” (1994)

Happy Birthday to John Popper, frontman for Blues Traveler, who hits the big 5-0 today. I’ll never forget working the overnight shift at a community radio station back in 1990, when this band’s self-titled debut album arrived. Off the bat I was surprised to discover it wasn’t a blues album. But this band had something that completely captivated me. Not a synthesizer in sight. None of that Eighties-era overproduced reverb crap. Just some crisp, clean Rock, interesting songwriting, and some of the best harmonica I had ever heard, not to mention the fantastic lead guitar. And this was before the term “jam band” even existed! I wore the album out on my show. To me Blues Traveler stood for one important thing: we were finally turning the page on the horrible, homogenized, soul-less music of the 1980s.

  1. Oh man, some serious childhood memories associated with this song. I even remember seeing the video on Beavis and Butthead.
