Song of the Day: Elton John – “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”

Happy birthday wishes go out to Sir Elton John, who turns 70 years old today. Here’s one of Elton’s biggest hits, a memorable ballad that reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin for his then-wife Toni Russo, although Taupin, per Songfacts, actually regrets one of the song’s more prominent lyrics. “The whole ‘loving you more than I love life itself’ is something I would never say now,” Taupin once said. “It’s kind of a crass sentiment and totally false.” Another cool piece of trivia from this song — the harmonica on it was played by Stevie Wonder.
