Song of the Day: Pink Floyd – “Vera”

Happy birthday to Dame Vera Lynn, who turns 100 years old today. We gave a Song of the Day tribute to Vera on her 99th birthday last year with her signature song “We’ll Meet Again,” and this year we’re doing it with a track off The Wall that is inspired by her. I’ve seen multiple different interpretations for this song — obviously there’s symbolism here given Vera’s significance in World War II and Roger Waters losing his father in WWII — but one that I like is Waters yearning for the hope Lynn inspired with her songs. There’s been some celebration in recent days for Lynn’s birthday as a new album, Vera Lynn 100, was released March 17, featuring her original vocals over new orchestrations, and there was an event in her honor that took place on Saturday. The release of Vera Lynn 100 makes her the first centenarian to release a new album. Plus she was to have her likeness projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover — how cool is that?
