Song of the Day: The Grateful Dead – “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)”

The Grateful Dead’s self-titled debut album hit the streets 50 years ago on this day. There were a slew of covers on the album, but this track, which was the album opener, was one written by the band. And as it turned out, it served as a good opening statement for the band:

Well everybody’s dancin’ in a ring around the sun
Nobody’s finished, we ain’t even begun.
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat.
Try on your wings and find our where it’s at.

Hey hey, hey, come (party every day)

50 years later, here we are. The band itself may technically be over, but it’s a safe bet their music and image will continue to live on long after we’re gone.
