Song Of The Day: 10cc – “I’m Not In Love”

10cc’s third album The Original Soundtrack was released on this day in 1975. The band’s first two albums hit big in the UK, but this album broke them worldwide largely on the basis of this song, which peaked at No. 2 in the US. Safe to say the US charts had never seen a hit single quite like this one: synthesized atmospheric sweeps descending into a breakdown of random piano and bass notes and near-silence capped by a whispered woman’s voice. In a way this track illustrates both beginnings and ends in Rock history. It signaled the beginning of the synthesizer’s 1980s dominance, but it also heralded the end of the mainstream popularity of Art Rock.
