Song of the Day: Tom Petty – “Girl on LSD”

This track is inspired by the birthday of producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin, who turns 54 years old today. Rubin’s production resume across rock, pop and rap music is needless to say extremely impressive, as he’s produced albums for AC/DC, Metallica, Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Black Sabbath, Danzig, Lady Gaga, Johnny Cash, Adele… the list goes on and on. Rubin was a producer on Tom Petty’s 1994 album Wildflowers, which was supposed to originally contain this track, but Warner Bros. thought it too controversial. It was released as a B-Side to “You Don’t Know How It Feels” and wound up being a cult hit, even getting some radio airplay. There’s no doubt this song is entertaining and sometimes clever.
