Sean Lennon Posts Poignant Song Co-Written With Carrie Fisher

So wonderful to see Sean Lennon really coming into his own these days as an artist and musician. I was blown away by his work last year in the Claypool Lennon Delirium, a good-time prog-revivalist project in partnership with the mad genius of bass guitar Les Claypool. Lennon’s songwriting, musicianship and stage presence in that band was a real eye-opener for me.

This past weekend Lennon blew my mind again with the kind of thoughtful and meaningful gesture his father would have loved. He posted a song called “Bird Song” that he co-wrote with Carrie Fisher. It turns out that he and Fisher were good friends for many years and spent a lot of time together, undoubtedly bound by the famous parent thing. As Lennon explained:

Carrie and I wrote this song years ago. When she died I just felt I had to record it. This is only a demo unmixed, we only had a few hours to record it. But the lyrics she wrote with me I think are marvelous. Carrie and I used to stay up til dawn chatting and pontificating about life. They were my best moments. Anyway… we wrote a song about staying up too late and hearing the birds sing. Willow Smith is a prodigal angel and was generous enough to lend her golden voice to this little tune.

That’s right, 16-year-old Willow Smith, daughter of Will, accompanies Lennon in singing the lyrics he wrote with Carrie Fisher. That’s three degrees of growing up under big shadows. But the results are truly wonderful. It’s a beautiful and moving little piece of work, even if it is only a demo.

You can just hear Carrie Fisher’s voice in some of these great lyrics: “It’s all so wrong / To greet the dawn / The birds sing that awful song saying / ‘You don’t belong here!’” Lennon’s musical treatment is really gorgeous. Of course it’s very Beatley and his father’s influence is obvious, but it’s not an impersonation and there’s enough of Sean’s own personality and talent shining through to allow it to stand on its own. Willow Smith sounds great too. He should mix it and officially release it, I think there’s a lot of people who would really love this.

Bird Song

Love comes on cat’s feet
It circles the corners
It sits by the window and whispers
‘Mine! Your mine! All mine!’

My arm fell asleep
And dreamt it was your arm
Hush lest we break the spell
Oh well, oh well

It’s all so wrong
To greet the dawn
The birds sing that awful song saying
‘You don’t belong here!’

Love comes on cat’s feet
It circles the corners
It sits by the window and whispers
‘Mine!’
