On this day in 1970 Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water started an amazing 10-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, and deservedly so. Front to back it is truly one of the great albums of all time. But around the same time we were learning that it would be the duo’s last album together because they were splitting up. A few weeks earlier, we’d all heard the confirmation that The Beatles were officially calling it quits too. Suddenly it was all so discouraging. It felt like that magic communal feeling of the 1960s was starting to break apart in our hands as soon as the calendar flipped over to the new decade.
