Happy birthday wishes go out to Who frontman Roger Daltrey, who turns 73 years old today. “Baba O’Riley” is one of many iconic performances Daltrey gave The Who, and of course it’s one of their most epic anthems. The title is a combination of Indian spiritual master Meher Baba and composer Terry Riley, whose work influenced multiple sounds on Who’s Next, an idea that was combined with a separate song responsible for the “Teenage Wasteland” portions of the track. The track was originally not released as a single in the U.K. and the U.S. but has of course gone on to be one of the band’s iconic songs.
