Song of the Day: J. Geils Band – “Centerfold”

On this week (and five other weeks) 35 years ago, this song sat atop the Billboard Hot 100. It was a huge hit for J. Geils Band, sitting atop the chart for six weeks (Feb. 6-March 13). The song was once selected by Billboard as the No. 53 song of all time. It’s a track about a man who years later discovers his high school crush in a “girly” magazine and seems torn between being heartbroken and aroused (A part of me has just been ripped/The pages from my mind are stripped/Oh no, I can’t deny it/Oh yea, I guess I gotta buy it!). Per Songfacts, this song and the album it’s from, Freeze Frame, had more synthesizer on it than previous J. Geils works because, as keyboardist/songwriter Seth Justman said, the band previously couldn’t afford to purchase keyboards.
