Song of the Day: Paul Simon – “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”

Here’s one for the bah-humbug Valentine’s Day crowd. This song, which was inspired by Simon’s divorce from his first wife Peggy Harper, sat top the Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1976. It was Simon’s only number one hit and stayed atop the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks before it was eventually upended by “Theme From S.W.A.T.” by Rhythm Heritage on February 28. It feels odd to say Simon only has one Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit and that it was moved aside by a TV show theme song, although as far as TV theme songs go, the S.W.A.T. theme is probably about as badass as it gets.
