Song of the Day: Genesis – “Mama”



Happy birthday wishes go out to Phil Collins, who turns 66 years old today. I hope his birthday is happier than this song. The first single off their 1983 self-titled album, I’ve always found this song to be unsettling. Collins said on a 1983 radio interview the song is “about a young teenager that’s got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he’s just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn’t understand why she isn’t interested in him.” It’s a powerful song, no question. I could do without Phil’s icky laugh in this song though… creeped me out when I first heard it as a kid and still makes my skin crawl a bit today. The song reached No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 but was the band’s biggest hit in the U.K., reaching No. 4.
