Song of the Day: Blur – “Song 2”

This track was one of 20 featured in a recent Billboard piece on alternative rock songs turning 20 years old this year. The song isn’t like much of the rest of Blur’s catalog but became their biggest hit in the U.S., even though the song is supposed to be a parody of grunge music. There’s not much of a story behind the song’s title as it’s simply a working title that wound up sticking. It’s still understandably popular and a big crowd mover live; “You know, if we didn’t play ‘Song 2’ we’d never get invited to a festival again,” drummer Dave Rowntree said in 2015. Blur of course came back in 2015 with their first album in 12 years, The Magic Whip. Speaking of comebacks, Blur frontman Damon Albarn is busy with the first new Gorillaz album in six years, which is slated for a 2017 release.
