Watch Great New Radiohead Cover By Phantogram

Quirky male-female Pop/Rock duos have become a cottage industry ever since the White Stripes invented the format an amazing 20 years ago. Off the top of my head I can think of Sleigh Bells, Beach House, The Kills and Phantogram, and there are others I can picture but whose name I’ve forgotten. It’s a definite thing, and that’s a good thing.

Phantogram is an interesting outfit, starting off as more of an electronica chill combo, and then re-emerging this year with a beefier sound and a lot more visibility. I wouldn’t call myself a fan, but they’ve got some interesting ideas musically and lyrically, and that’s what really counts, no?

But this video came across my desktop today, and I have to say I was impressed. I mean, I would be impressed if anyone had the balls to cover any Radiohead song, but “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” is such a beautiful track from my favorite Radiohead album, and a cover band would really have to mangle it for me not to like it. And Phantogram certainly did not do that, they actually did a pretty good job.

It was fascinating to watch this electronica duo add bass and drums and perform the song analog style. It sounds as if they play one note and drum beat for every two that Radiohead laid down on the original, but that only speaks to the amazing virtuosity of the Greenwood boys and Phil Selway, not to mention the song’s beautiful and deceptively challenging chord changes.

Lead singer Sarah Barthel wobbles a bit here and there but all in all does justice to Thom Yorke’s undersea lyrics and melody. Nice job, and it makes me wonder if Phantogram has stumbled upon yet another new direction for themselves.

  1. I love Phantogram! They’re songs are so catchy. It always surprises me to listen to a ‘new’ band only to discover that they’ve been around for a few years. “Don’t Move” is a permanent staple on my workout playlist.
