New Hollywood Drama About Rock Scene To Feature Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Hollywood movies about Rock music are typically a hit-and-miss proposition, but let’s face it, mostly miss. For every Almost Famous, which seemed to ring true in every scene, there are dozens of movies like A Star Is Born or Rock Of Ages which tended to rely on every Rock cliché or caricature in the book in order to get their stale, recycled stories across.

Well there’s a new movie coming out in March that promises a fresh, original take on Rock music. Song To Song is a movie set against the Austin, Texas music scene, starring Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara as a pair of struggling songwriters who get entangled with a music mogul and a waitress played by Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman, respectively.

One of the things that makes this movie so intriguing is the overwhelming presence of real-life musicians, including Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence and the Machine, Arcade Fire, the Black Lips, Lykke Li, Fleet Foxes and Iron & Wine. Presumably they will play and perform as themselves, but you never know for sure when you’re dealing with director Terrence Malick.

He’s the other reason this film holds a lot of promise. Malick made his name with popular movies like Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, but in the last ten years or so he has become known for a very arty, non-linear, experimental style of filmmaking. 2011’s The Tree Of Life examined a family’s trajectory within the context of the prehistoric formation of the Earth, while last year’s Knight Of Cups was a plot-free, dialogue-free treatment of a Hollywood screenwriter’s personal alienation.

Malick has made some real crazy, off-the-wall cinema, and I think this makes him the perfect candidate to give Rock music the kind of fresh and exciting treatment it deserves from Hollywood. Song To Song will be released on March 17, and I can’t wait to see it.
