Song of the Day: The Flaming Lips – “Do You Realize??”

With the start of a new year comes the growth in anticipation for some of the year’s biggest rock releases, one of which will come this month as The Flaming Lips release their new album Oczy Mlody (Jan. 13). The band has posted three videos for tracks from the album: “The Castle,” “How?” and “Sunrise (Eyes of the Young).” Our pick for Song of the Day is off 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and is one of the band’s more beloved songs and a good, accessible starting point for those unfamiliar with the band. This song, for a time, was the official rock song of the state of Oklahoma. It was selected as the winner by people of Oklahoma from a panel of 10 songs, but once the Oklahoma House got wind of some of the band’s lyrics, they for various reasons (one of which was bassist Michael Ivins wearing a shirt with a hammer and sickle on it to the state capitol) rejected the song. In 2009, then-governor Brad Henry made the song the state rock song via executive order, but the song’s reign with that title ended in 2011 when new governor Mary Fallin chose not to renew the order.
