One Last Christmas Gift From Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

For anyone looking for one last Christmas album to get them through the ups and downs of the holiday season, you cannot go wrong with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’s 2015 soon-to-be-classic It’s A Holiday Soul Party. Of course it will bring some pangs of sadness this year after the passing of Ms. Jones on November 18 this year.

But the group has left us with one last little gift, releasing this week a video for the soul Christmas classic “Please Come Home For Christmas” from the album. The video was planned and completed before Jones’ death, and it is a real sweet beauty. Directed by Alex Howard & David Drew Hatter, the video consists of 3,200 photos and was created entirely on an iPhone 6 Plus. In total, it took three months and 600 man-hours for Howard and Hatter to finish the video.

It conjures up all the old classic stop-motion Christmas specials of the past like “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer”, except it deals with the more adult notion of being lonely at Christmastime. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Incidentally, earlier this week Ms. Jones was remembered at two memorials that took place in her two hometowns of Augusta, Georgia and Brooklyn, New York. Dap-Kings bandleader Gabriel Roth released this statement: “Our friend Sharon has always been at the heart of Daptone and always will be. I am so grateful to her and to all of you for putting your hearts into all of this in so many ways. We wish you could be home with us this Christmas Sharon. We love you and miss you.”

And to all a good night.
