System of a Down progressing on new album

serjtankianSystem of a Down haven’t had a new album in over a decade, but it might not be much longer before a new one hits the streets, based on recent comments from drummer John Dolmayan.

In an interview with Kerrang, Dolmayan gave some details on where the band is with their progress towards a new album.

We’ve been working on a new album for the last six months and there’s about 15 songs that I think are album-worthy,” Dolmayan said (via NME.com). “We don’t know what’s happening in terms of release, it’s still not 100% as far as plans go.

“I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us, though, because it’s been 11 years – at least 12 by the time it comes out.”

Dolmayan went on to give more positive news about the album.

“Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things,” Dolmayan said. “We’re not trying to make ‘Toxicity’ Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels. I’m not gonna put my name on an album I’m not 100% proud of.”

System of a Down’s last albums came in 2005 when the band released Mesmerize and Hypnotize. They began touring again in 2010 following a hiatus and have maintained much of their popularity despite having such a long gap between albums. A new SOAD album would automatically become one of the most anticipated rock releases of the year whenever it is announced.
