Song of the Day: The Verve – “The Drugs Don’t Work”

This week in 1997, The Verve hit No. 1 in the UK with their album Urban Hymns. This beautiful but downright depressing ballad and “Bittersweet Symphony” are of course perhaps the biggest hits from the album, but there are quite a few other terrific tracks on there as well (it isn’t one of the UK’s biggest sellers for nothing). This track hit No. 1 in the UK and struck a chord with the nation after the death of Princess Diana. I thought it was a bit strange the first time I heard it because I thought they were saying “The Trucks Don’t Work.” Please try to un-hear that when listening to the song.
