Song of the Day: Radiohead – “How to Disappear Completely”

Happy birthday wishes go out to Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who turns 48 today. Yorke and Radiohead are currently busy touring following the long-awaited release of A Moon Shaped Pool earlier this year, but this song is one from one of their most celebrated albums, Kid A, which was released 16 years ago this month. The song might be the most accessible on Kid A but is also the most depressing. According to Rolling Stone, the song was influenced by a comment Michael Stipe made to Yorke. “The R.E.M. frontman told him that the best way to deal with the pressures of touring is to say to yourself, ‘I’m not here, this isn’t happening…,’ RS wrote. But, of course, the song’s lyrics are ambiguous enough for people to establish their own personal meaning.
