Song of the Day: Guns n’ Roses – “November Rain”

There’s been plenty of talk in recent weeks about Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten turning 25 years old, but also turning 25 this month were Guns n’ Roses’ Use Your Illusion I and II. Historically, those first two albums are probably looked back on as a bigger deal (at least Nevermind certainly is), but at the time, the Use Your Illusion albums were among the most anticipated rock albums in years. Few people could have guessed what would have happened to the band from there, but the albums were both gobbled up and enjoyed by millions of fans. There were several hits to come from the albums, but the one that has stood the test of time is “November Rain,” which reached No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was the longest song ever to reach the top 10 (GNR had the kind of clout back then where this song received normal radio and MTV airplay despite its length). The video has a whopping 660 million-plus views on YouTube, a number normally reserved for only the most popular modern day pop and rap stars. While the Use Your Illusion albums may have just turned 25, this song has been around since 1983 in various forms. There was even once an 18-minute version of the song.
