Song of the Day: Deep Purple – “Hush”

On this day in 1968, Deep Purple released their debut single, a cover of the song “Hush,” which was originally written by Joe South for Billy Joe Royal in 1967. The song, which was off the album Shades of Deep Purple, was a much bigger hit in the U.S. than in Deep Purple’s home country of England, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has quite an interesting history of bands to have covered it as in addition to Deep Purple, it’s been covered by Milli Vanilli, Kula Shaker, The Partridge Family, The Electric Amish, and Killdozer, among others.
