On this day in 1967, The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show over this performance. As many know, The Doors were asked not to include the word “higher,” instead replacing it with the word “better.” There had been rehearsals using the new lyric, but when the show went live, Jim Morrison sang the original lyric, which caused the show to cancel future appearances with the band. Anyone who saw the Oliver Stone film The Doors probably remembers how this moment was portrayed, but as you can see from the video, the film embellished the incident for dramatic effect. This isn’t the best recording of the performance, but a complete recording is hard to find.
