Song of the Day: Eagles – “The Last Resort”

Happy birthday wishes go out to Don Henley, who turns 69 years old today. This powerful song, which closed out the Eagles’ classic album Hotel California, has Henley and Glenn Frey listed as its songwriters, but by and large it was Henley’s baby, as Frey detailed during an interview on an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard: “I have to give all the credit for ‘The Last Resort’ to (Don) Henley. It was the first time that Don, on his own, took it upon himself to write an epic story… Don found himself as a lyricist with that song, kind of outdid himself.” Henley has said the overriding theme of the song, which is easy to determine by listening to the lyrics, is man’s tendency to destroy that which is beautiful.
