A Brilliant And Timely New Single From My Morning Jacket

mymorningjacketAssassinations, social unrest. political chaos, war in the streets — it’s as if 1968 has returned for another go-around these days. The good news is that like 1968, artists are speaking up, getting involved, and drawing inspiration from the world’s troubles a little more than usual. Whether today’s artists come close to the creative explosion of Rock musicians in 1968 remains doubtful, but you never know.

The latest band to make a statement about current happenings is My Morning Jacket, who released “Magic Bullet” this week. I think this track is fantastic, you’ve got to hear it. It’s like a cross between John Lennon and Prince. It features a relentless mid-slow syncopated groove, with an electronic gated effect on the bass and drums that really draws you in.

Add in Yimmy Yames’ trademark vocals, some searing guitar work and a couple of baritone saxes, and you got something pretty original sounding on your hands.

James released a companion statement saying love and peace is the answer, and of course he’s right. The lyric for the song is a little more nuanced and it is very good. I was struck by the Lennonisms – “far as I can tell” / “itchy trigger finger” / “I mean come on”. Apparently the song was written about gun violence in general, but it is eerily appropriate to events of the past week, too. Props to Jim and the band for a fine piece of work.

AIN’T NO MAGIC BULLET COME FROM MAGIC SHELL.
NO OTHER WAY TO PUT IT. FAR AS I CAN TELL.
AIN’T NO WAY TO SOLVE A PROBLEM OF THE STREETS.
WITH AN ITCHY TRIGGER FINGER…
SERVANT OF DISEASE.
I MEAN COME ON…

HEAR IT FROM THE PEOPLE. READ IT IN THE PRESS.
LEARN IT AT THE STEEPLE. FORGET IT IN DISTRESS.
LOOKIN FOR SALVATION…JUST A LITTLE HELP.
BUT IT NEVER SEEMS TO FIND ME…
I’M GONNA TAKE IT FOR MYSELF.
I MEAN C’MON….
(THERE’S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY)

THAT LOW FEELIN STARTS TO GET TO ME-
NEED TO FIND ESCAPE.
SO SMOKE IT FILLS THE LUNGS…
AND DRINK CORRUPTS THE BRAIN.
AND MORALS GET CONFUSED…
IN A DESPERATE MIND.
AND THERE AIN’T NO WRONG OR RIGHT…
IN A DESPERATE TIME.

BUT I KNOW THERE’S A SOLUTION-
DEEP WITHIN MYSELF.
BUT I AIN’T NEVER GONNA REACH IT…
WITHOUT SOMEBODY’S HELP.
I MEAN A COME ON…
