Song of the Day: Elvis Costello – “Alison”

This week in 1977, singer/songwriter Elvis Costello quit his day job at Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics to become a full-time musician. Costello, who had worked jobs such as a data entry clerk at Arden and a computer operator at a bank, signed with Columbia Records in 1977, which resulted in his standout debut album My Aim Is True. This track, which still stands out as one of his best, was a single off the album. Costello, a recent inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, has been vague in the past as to the meaning of this song, saying it’s about “disappointing somebody.”
