Mid-2016 Mix Tape

jordanmixtapeHappy mid-summer, everyone! Since we are more than half way through the fiscal year 2016, this seems like as good a time as any to do a bit of a round-up based on what we’ve heard so far this year. There have been a lot of great records, but I’m whittling it down to ten songs so that I can include a bit of brief commentary.

The two rules for my particular mix:

  1. All songs must have been released in 2016.
  2. No duplicating artists. This is more of a rule for mix tapes in general.

And we’re off.

1. Parquet Courts – “One Man No City”

Talking Heads-esque track that collapses into inviting weirdness near the end.

2. Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop – “The Lamb You Lost.”

Haunting and unforgettable. One of the year’s best songs.

3.Whitney – “The Falls”

A slice of 60’s pop with a hint of Chicago soul.

4. The Hotelier -“Opening Mail for My Grandmother”

A hypnotic riff and a slow build makes this one the standout track in an album filled with them.

5. Modern Baseball – “Apple Cider, I Don’t Mind.”

Plucked straight out of a New Order record, this gem pulses with dance-punk energy and the rhythm is infectious.

6. PUP – “Sleep in the Heat”

Raucous, rude, and bursting with creative guitar work, this Canadian group dropped a modern classic this year with the album The Dream is Over.

7. Sunflower Bean – “Easier Said”

Dream pop meets shoegaze? Seriously, where do I sign up?

8. Animal Collective – “FloriDada”

At this point, Animal Collective are elder statesmen for psychedelic-trance-rock, and they prove they’re still vital with this bouncy, delightfully frantic track.

9. Car Seat Headrest – “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales”

Will Toledo’s big break, in spite of some of the controversy that surrounds it, remains an excellent collection of songs. We’ll be hearing more from him, mark my words.

10. Ty Segall – “Emotional Mugger/Leopard Priestess”

The slightly off-kilter guitar hero drops a hard rock-psych album to rival the classics.

.

There you go! Hope you enjoy.

Anything I forgot? Hit me up in the comments.

  1. Some great choons on this list. I might have thought Will Toledo invited even more controversy by waxing poetic about drunk driving.
