Song of the Day: John Mellencamp – “Pink Houses”

Yeah, this is a re-run from last year, but I think it’s still as good of a choice as any for this day. There are many songs that could be best suited for this day as the United States celebrates Independence Day, but one that will certainly be played across the country at festivals is “Pink Houses” by John Mellencamp. It’s a great song for the occasion but is also just a great song in general and paints a compelling picture of the nation. So many can relate to this verse:

Well, there’s a young man in a t-shirt
Listenin’ to a rockin’ rollin’ station
He’s got greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, Lord this must be my destination
‘Cause they told me when I was younger
Said boy, you’re gonna be president
But just like everything else
Those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

It’s more than just a song to celebrate July 4th; it’s also a thoughtful view of American life.

  1. This song is better than average, but I can’t shake the feeling that Mellencamp is a poor-man’s Springsteen.
