On this day in 1969, the Hollies recorded “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” Once the Hollies broke with their harmony-heavy and simpler structured songs (i.e. Graham Nash left…), they ranged out into new territory including “He Ain’t Heavy”, which ironically was a much heavier song than “Bus Stop” or “Carrie Ann”. It got a second life when it was re-released in 1988 (first came out 20 years earlier) after it was used for a Miller Lite ad and embraced by the public. Lite was not heavy. A more interesting side note to the tune, perhaps, is that a young session pianist played on it: Elton John.
