On this day in 1967, the classic “Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum entered the Billboard chart, where it would peak at No. 5. Widely regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time, “Pale” is a rare single to have sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The song went to No. 1 in 11 countries and has been covered over 1000 times. The song’s haunting melody was inspired by Bach, while the title stems from a time songwriter Keith Reid overhead someone saying “You’ve turned a whiter shade of pale” at a party.
