Song of the Day: David Bowie – “Starman”

On this day in 1972, David Bowie released the album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. This song is one of multiple classics off the album and was the first Bowie song to enter into the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (peaked at No. 65). The song depicts Ziggy Stardust delivering the message of the Starman — There’s a starman waiting in the sky/He’d like to come and meet us/But he thinks he’d blow our minds/There’s a starman waiting in the sky/He’s told us not to blow it/’Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile/He told me/Let the children lose it/Let the children use it/Let all the children boogie — a message that certainly makes sense. The song has been covered over 20 times and has appeared in multiple TV shows and films, most recently 2015’s The Martian.
