Song of the Day: John Lennon – “Slippin’ and Slidin’/Imagine” (live at the Salute To Sir Lew Grade)

On this day in 1975, John Lennon’s performance of Little Richard’s “Slippin’ and Slidin'” and “Imagine” during the ‘Salute To Sir Lew Grade’ television special aired, which would turn out to be his final public performance. Lennon had fought legal battles with the TV mogul Grade after Grade purchased the majority stake of Lennon and Paul McCartney’s song rights in 1970 but played the event anyway, coming out for some reason came out dressed in a red jumpsuit with a backing group called BOMF — “Brothers of Mother Fuckers” — who were on this night bald men in black jumpsuits wearing masks on the backs of their heads. Lennon also performed “Stand By Me” at the event, which was left out of the show’s broadcast.
