Check Out The Trailer For Fantastic New Frank Zappa Movie

That Frank Zappa was a musical genius goes without saying. I talk often and perhaps excessively about wanting to see Rock musicians explore their jazz impulses more often, about the need to nurture the jazz branch on the Rock family tree. Well Zappa was absolute proof of the extraordinary things that can happen when you bring jazz and Rock and other music together. Genius is the only word for it.

Zappa was also blessed with a profound, piercing intellect. He never had much formal education, because of course he believed it stifled independent thought. But if you’ve ever seen him in an interview, you could tell this guy had razor-sharp faculties of his own. Whether he was talking about music, or freedom of speech, or excessive commercialism, his arguments were convincingly and sometimes devastatingly persuasive.

What’s so great about the new documentary Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words is that it consists of only that: Frank being Frank. No narrator, no talking heads, just lots of clips of him talking, and lots of clips of his music. This from the promotional material:

Director Thorsten Schütte has painstakingly gathered rare archival footage of Zappa interviews and performances from obscure TV stations around the world. This intimate portrait follows Zappa from clean-shaven, besuited youth, to fearless chief freak, to his relentlessly productive final days before his death.

I think Zappa’s message — that musicians should push limits and explore new boundaries — will resonate with certain artists for decades to come. As for right now, this doc provides a welcome opportunity for every Rock fan to truly appreciate how much the guy brought to the table.

Make sure you check out the trailer above. If this doesn’t look like a movie that will blow your mind, then you probably need to take your mind blower to the shop for repairs. It opens in theaters across North America on June 24th. Look for it.
