On 10th anniversary of Syd Barrett’s death, Pink Floyd gets its own stamp set

It’s almost enough to turn me into a stamp collector. The Royal Mail has decided to honor Pink Floyd with its own stamp set. There are eight sets in all along with collectors’ bundles, and Pink Floyd envelopes and post cards. There’s even going to be a set dedicated to Syd Barrett.

The sets are due out on July 7, 2016 – the 10th anniversary of Syd Barrett’s death. All of the sets feature the entire band and several of their iconic albums and tours. There will also be a Syd Barrett set that “features The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and UFO Club stamps with a unique postmark.”

In addition to marking the anniversary of Barrett’s death, the stamps mark the 50th anniversary of the group’s turn professional.

“Few bands in the history of rock have managed to carve out a career as rich and expansive as that of Pink Floyd,” said Royal Mail (via The Mirror).

After a long bout with diabetes, Barrett eventually succumbed to pancreatic cancer. “Do find time to play some of Syd’s songs and to remember him as the madcap genius who made us all smile with his wonderfully eccentric songs about bikes, gnomes and scarecrows,” bandmate David Gilmour said at the time. “His career was painfully short, yet he touched more people than he could ever know.”
