Song of the Day: Simple Minds – “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”

On this day in 1985, Simple Minds sat atop the U.S. charts with this ’80s pop/rock classic. Interestingly enough, the song had a tepid response among musicians in the early going as co-writer Keith Forsey asked The Fixx, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song but was turned down, and Simple Minds initially turned the song down as well. The song was later featured in the film The Breakfast Club and consequently became part of the life soundtrack of quite a few kids of the 1980s. I actually watched The Breakfast Club awhile back for the first time in years and found myself starting to sympathize with the principal a bit — probably a sign of getting old.
