MTV announces move back towards music with new series, new episodes of Unplugged

MTVIs MTV about to become Music Television again?

We’ll believe that when we see it, although their recent announcement is certainly a good start. The network announced two new music-related shows — Wonderland, which focuses on “showcasing the best new music through live performances,” and an unnamed hip-hop competition show. Perhaps most exciting of all, however, was the announcement that there will be new episodes of MTV’s acoustic concert series Unplugged.

“MTV is returning to its music roots,” says Patrick Hoskin of MTV.com.

Unplugged was responsible for some of the better musical moments of the 1990s, with some of the best shows coming from Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Alice In Chains, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, and the Eagles. Recapturing the level of those performances won’t be easy, but its return is certainly welcome.
