Song of the Day: Norman Greenbaum – “Spirit in the Sky”

Get a load of this lineup! This week in 1970, the U.S. top 5 singles chart was as follows: 1. The Beatles – “Let It Be”; 2. The Jackson 5 – “ABC”; 3. John Lennon – “Instant Karma”; 4. Norman Greenbaum – “Spirit in the Sky”; 5. Simon & Garfunkel – “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Talk about some heavy hitters. Greenbaum might not be quite as well known as the others on this list, of course, but his song doesn’t take a back seat to them and is a classic just like the rest. Greenbaum once said the song was inspired by watching Western movies where the characters wanted to die with their boots on.
