On this day in 1994, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana died in his Seattle home at age 27 via suicide. The world didn’t find out until days later as electrician Gary Smith discovered the body on April 8; it’s safe to say no rock fan will forget the moment they heard the news. This song from the famous Unplugged show, as Cobain mentions, is a cover of The Vaselines’ reworking (originally called “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam”) of the Christian hymn “I’ll Be A Sunbeam,” and like every other song Nirvana performed in that show, they nailed it. It’s one of many moving moments from their now-legendary concert.

  1. Cobain loved the Vaselines. He covered “Molly’s Lips” and “Son of a Gun” for the Insecticide collection (I believe). I would say I like Nirvana’s version of “Jesus” the best, though.
