Song of the Day: Cream – “Crossroads”

We wish a happy birthday to the legendary Eric Clapton, who turns 71 years old today. It’s only fitting on Clapton’s birthday that we go with the song that has what quite a few people regard as his greatest guitar moment. The song that “Crossroads” covers, Robert Johnson’s “Cross Road Blues”, certainly has its own place in music history, but this version has an identity and legacy of its own. Rolling Stone magazine once ranked “Crossroads” as the third-greatest guitar song of all time, behind just “Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry” and “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix. Played at San Francisco’s Winterland on March 10th, 1968, Clapton was 22 years old when he played this song.
