Tom Petty’s long lost Southern rock band to release album

Long before he was famous, Tom Petty joined up with four other guys in Gainesville, Fla., to form a Southern rock group. The year was 1970, and the band was Mudcrutch. Petty sang and played bass alongside Mike Campbell (guitar), Tom Leadon (guitar and vocals), Jim Lenehan (lead vocals) and Randall Marsh (drums).

Mudcrutch chased the dream as the house band at Gainesville’s Dub’s Lounge for several years. By 1974, they were good enough to land a record deal that moved them to LA. After an unsuccessful single, though, the group’s record label broke them up, and The Heartbreakers rose from the ashes.

Now, Petty’s dusting off his bass, the boys are back in town and Mudcrutch is resurrecting for a second album dubbed “2.” You can hear the group’s first single off the album here:

“I don’t think I’m going to do any more solo records,” Petty told Rolling Stone last year. “I don’t see that on the horizon. Well, the truth is that I would call these guys to play anyway. There’s nobody I’m longing to play with, and I’d rather play with them. At this point in my life, it’s such an honor to play with Benmont and Mike. It’s just my favorite band to play with. I just don’t want to make a solo record. I don’t see the point.”

“2” marks the second album from Mudcrutch after the band reunited in 2008 for a self-titled disc. Mudcrutch will tour this summer in support of the album. Here are all of their currently-announced dates:
