On this day in 1980, Queen hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with this song. It stayed atop the chart for four weeks and also hit number on in the Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, and Mexico. It didn’t take Freddie Mercury more than a few minutes to compose this hit. “‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ took me five or ten minutes,” Mercury said in a 1981 interview with Melody Maker. “I did that on the guitar, which I can’t play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords.”
